When The Weather Channel first went on the air in 1982, Spears developed a deep love of weather. He would also spend a lot of time watching it with his grandparents. Right here in Denver, at Metropolitan State University, he earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology in 2005. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a Master of Science in Geosciences and Applied Meteorology in December 2013.

He began his career in television journalism here in Denver at KMGH-TV as a weather producer before moving on to work as a news and traffic presenter for Newsradio 850KOA. Additionally, he produced the morning show at KDVR-TV.

He currently serves as a volunteer weather observer with CoCoRaHS, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network, as well as teaching meteorological and climate courses at his alma mater, Metropolitan State University. Spear, who was born and reared in North Little Rock, Arkansas, has called Colorado his home since June 2000 despite moving there. He enjoys traveling and working on home improvement projects in his own time. He loves dogs a much.
