American actor, singer, and musician Gavin James Creel is most recognized for his roles in musical theater. Before appearing as Claude in the 2009 Broadway revival of Hair, which received Tony Award nominations for both productions, Creel made his Broadway debut in 2002 in the title role of Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie. His other stage credits include national tours of Fame (1998) and Into the Woods (2023), as well as Broadway’s La Cage aux Folles (2004), She Loves Me (2016), Waitress (2019), and Into the Woods (2022); the West End’s Mary Poppins (2006) and Waitress (2020). His most well-known on-screen character is Bill from Eloise at the Plaza and its Christmas-themed sequel. He is mostly a stage actor.

Creel was born in Ohio’s Findlay. After 48 years since April 18, 1976, he passed away on September 30, 2024. He graduated from Findlay High School in 1994. In 1998, he graduated from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater.

He portrayed the part of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon from 2012 to 2015; he was honored with a Laurence Olivier Award for creating the character in the West End production of the musical and has since performed it on Broadway and in the US National Tour. He was honored with a Tony Award in 2017 for his portrayal of Cornelius Hackl in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!.

Creel was homosexual. He frequently accompanied Rosie O’Donnell on the LGBT Family Vacations cruise. Along with Rory O’Malley and Jenny Kanelos, he was a founding member of Broadway Impact. This is an LGBT advocacy organization that inspired the theater world in New York to support marriage equality. He has been with the Findlay First Edition Show Choir in the past.
2009 saw Creel go out with actor Jonathan Groff.

In March 2018, Creel took a brief leave of absence from Hello, Dolly! in order to heal from back surgery.

Creel was identified as having metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma in July 2024. At the age of 48, he passed away from cancer on September 30, 2024, at his Manhattan residence.
