He started anchoring in the year 1969 in the 11:00 pm weekend newscast. In the year 1971, the Vietnam war that took place, and Donaldson was in front to cover it for ABC. From 1973-74, Sam was an ABC’s Chief Watergate Correspondent having covered the trials of the Watergate Burglars, the Senate Watergate hearings, and the House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment investigation of President Nixon.
In 1976, he covered Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign and he was made the network’s White House Correspondent in January 1977. Therefore, He held that position until 1989 January. In the Sunday morning television program This Week with David Brinkley, Sam appeared as a panelist. He was anchoring the ABC Sunday Evening News from1979 to early August 1989. From there he moved to the network’s magazine program Primetime Live. He was anchoring with Diane Sawyer starting from 1989 to 1999.
He has also covered the first Persian Gulf War and co-anchored primetime live from Kuwait City. Thereafter, Iraq’s troops were swept out in force. He was voted the Best White House Correspondent by the readers of the Washington Journalism Review in the year 1985. He became also the Best Television Correspondent. In the following years 1986,-87,-88, and -89 by the readers of the same magazine. Sam and his wife, Jan, were listed as the “Washingtonians of the Year” by the courtesy of the Washingtonian magazine in 2002.
