Daniel Naroditsky, Biography

Daniel Naroditsky—known to nearly everyone in the chess world simply as Danya—was an American chess grandmaster, author, and commentator whose brilliance extended far beyond the board.

A prodigy from the start, he captured the Under-12 World Youth Chess Championship title in 2007. Six years later, in 2013, he won the U.S. Junior Championship and was officially awarded the grandmaster title at just 18—marking the arrival of a generational talent.

Daniel Naroditsky, Top 200 Chess Player

Though consistently ranked among the top 200 players in the world in classical chess, Naroditsky was especially formidable in faster formats—particularly blitz—where he was regularly ranked inside the global top 25. In 2024, he tied for first in the Swiss stage of the World Blitz Championship, narrowly missing the playoffs on tiebreaks.

Beyond competition, Naroditsky became one of the most influential chess educators of his era. He produced widely beloved instructional content on YouTube and Twitch, authored two books on chess, and contributed regularly to Chess Life and The New York Times.

Daniel Naroditsky, Childhood and Education

Daniel Naroditsky was born on November 9, 1995, in San Mateo, California. His parents were Jewish emigrants from the former Soviet Union—his father, Vladimir, from Ukraine, and his mother, Lena, from Azerbaijan.

He attended Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, California, and later enrolled at Stanford University, where he studied history until 2019.

Daniel Naroditsky, Cause of Death

In 2020, Naroditsky relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina — a move that would place him at the heart of one of America’s most vibrant and fast-growing chess communities.

He died on October 19, 2025, at the age of 29. Grandmaster Olexandr Bortnyk and Peter Giannatos—founder of the Charlotte Chess Center—went to his home to check on him and found him peacefully on his couch. The news of his death was announced by the Charlotte Chess Center the following day, with no cause disclosed.

Tributes poured in from across the chess world. American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura called Naroditsky a trailblazer—someone who helped redefine what chess could look like in the age of streaming and live commentary, bringing both the game and its deep beauty to a new generation of players and fans.

Daniel Naroditsky, Chess

Born in San Mateo, California, on November 9, 1995, Naroditsky learned chess at the age of six from his father.

In 2007, at just 11 years old, he won the Under-12 section of the World Youth Chess Championship with a score of 9½/11—tying with Illya Nyzhnyk and claiming the gold medal on tiebreaks. The victory immediately earned him the FIDE Master title. At the time, he was a member of the historic Mechanics’ Institute Chess Club.

By February 2010, at only 14 years and 3 months old, Naroditsky became the youngest published chess author in history with the release of Mastering Positional Chess: Practical Lessons of a Junior World Champion from New In Chess.

That same year, he scored 7½/9 at the 2010 U.S. Open, sharing second place with Alexander Shabalov, Varuzhan Akobian, and Julio Sadorra—finishing just behind Alejandro Ramírez—a performance that qualified him for the 2011 U.S. Championship.

US Junior Championships

He went on to compete in the 2011, 2012, and 2013 U.S. Junior Championships, winning outright in 2013 with a score of 6½/9, ahead of fellow prodigies Samuel Sevian and Luke Harmon-Vellotti. That victory secured his place in the 2014 U.S. Championship.

Daniel earned the first grandmaster norm at the Benasque Open in July 2011. His second came at the 2013 Philadelphia Open, where he tied for first with Fidel Corrales Jimenez, and he clinched his final norm later that year—again at the Benasque Open. He was officially awarded the grandmaster title in 2013.

In 2014, he received the prestigious Samford Chess Fellowship. That same year, he tied for fifth place at the high-stakes Millionaire Chess Open in Las Vegas. The following year, he represented the United States at the World Team Championship, scoring 4/7—with wins over Dmitry Jakovenko and Evgeny Postny—and finishing with a strong 2640 performance rating.

Naroditsky competed in the U.S. Championship multiple times—in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2021. His most notable result came in the 2021 edition, where he defeated World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana, who held a FIDE rating of 2800 at the time. In 2019, he tied for first place at the U.S. Masters Championship.

Vladimir Kramnik, Naroditsky’s Cause of Death

Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death for Daniel Naroditsky. However, former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik has publicly suggested that there may have been signs of distress surrounding Naroditsky’s final days. According to a report by The Times of India, Kramnik hinted at the possibility of foul play and claimed that those close to Naroditsky overlooked warning signs — though no official investigation or statement has confirmed his remarks.

Daniel Naroditsky: Age, Height, and Weight

The chess master died at the age of 29, having been born on November 9, 1995, and died in October 20, 2025. Unfortunately, information on his height and weight is not publicly available.

Daniel Naroditsky Net Worth

Daniel Naroditsky’s net worth in 2025 was estimated to be around $1 million. The majority of his income did not come from traditional tournament winnings but from his thriving presence in the digital chess world—including YouTube ad revenue, Twitch subscriptions and donations, online coaching, and premium digital chess courses.

In addition to streaming and teaching, he earned from book sales and his widely respected written work for publications such as The New York Times and Chess Life. His largest recorded prize from a single chess event was approximately $17,920 — a figure that underscored how his true financial success came from education and content creation, rather than prize money alone.

Naroditsky built a modern chess career — one where teaching, streaming, and storytelling mattered as much as competition.

Lewis Grandison Alexander, Biography

Lewis Grandison Alexander was a prolific poet, actor, playwright, and costume designer at the peak of the Black Renaissance. Among his many creative achievements, he spent a significant amount of his time producing poetry, which is the medium for which he is most well-known. The literature about Lewis G. Alexander has very little biographical information. He did, however, write a little autobiographical narrative for Countee Cullen’s Caroling Dusk as early as 1927. On July 4, 1900, Lewis Alexander came to the world in Washington, D.C.

Lewis Grandison Alexander, Education

He got his education at Howard University and in Washington’s public schools. Alexander participated in the Howard Players while attending Howard University, where he was coached by Mrs. Marie Moore Forrest. Alexander was an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania as well.

Lewis Grandison Alexander, Age, Birthday and Death

On July 4, 1900, Lewis Alexander came to the world in Washington, D.C. In 1945, Alexander passed away at a young age. The month and day of his death were not found in a thorough search of the literature. He died at the age of forty-four.

Lewis Grandison Alexander, Poetry

At the age of 17, Alexander started penning poetry, focusing on Japanese styles. “There are not enough English forms to satisfy Lewis Alexander, for having tried them he turns to two very interesting Japanese forms, the hokku and the tanka,” writes Nellie R. Bright in her review of Caroling Dusk. (Page 43, The Carolina Magazine, May 1928) “Alexander, interesting enough, has been most successful with his Japanese Hokku poems,” writes Charles S. Johnson in an essay. (Page 47, The Carolina Magazine, May 1927).

Alexander is described as “one of the younger Negro poets, a member of the Playwriters Circle of Washington, D. C.; has directed pageants and was director of The Ira Aldridge Players of the Grover Cleveland Center and the Randall Community Center Players” in the September 1925 issue of the National Urban League’s Opportunity Magazine. He has received instruction from the Ethiopian Art Theater. The Randall Community Center Players and the Ira Aldridge Players were both minor theatrical organizations with their headquarters in Washington, D.C. During the 1922–23 season, he performed on Broadway in The Comedy of Errors and Salome as a member of the Ethiopian Art Theatre.

Alexander Lewis, Young Black Literacy Circle

Several journals of the time, such as the Messenger, Opportunity, and a special edition of Palms, a poetry journal from Guadalajara, Mexico, published Lewis Alexander’s writings. In addition to illustrating the scope of the Black Renaissance, this special issue of Palms (October 1926), published by Countee Cullen, also shows how actively Alexander participated in that cultural awakening. Alexander contributed to the Palms issue, “Dream Song” and “A Group of Japanese Hokku.” Following his departure from Washington, Alexander actively participated in the emerging black literary scene in every city he called home. Along with other up-and-coming authors, his poetry was accepted for publication in Philadelphia’s “Black Opals” literary journal.

Lewis, Students at the University of North Carolina

By dedicating three special editions of Carolina Magazine, the student literary publication, to black writers, the University of North Carolina’s staff and students demonstrated their deep interest in black literature. Established in 1844, this literary magazine served as the University of North Carolina students’ official literary periodical. Alexander was an honorary editor of The Carolina Magazine’s “Negro Number,” which the students published in May 1927. In their acknowledgments, the editors noted how important Alexander was to the compilation of the content.

Lewis Grandison Alexander, Little Cinderella

One of the fresh young writers who actively participated was Lewis Alexander. The one issue of Fire!!, a quarterly dedicated to the younger Negro artists, included him as one of its poets. The magazine’s goal was to destroy many of the outdated, traditional Negro-white concepts of the past. One of the two poems provided by Alexander to that single issue of Fire!! is “Little Cinderella,” ironically about a sex worker.

Africa

Opportunity published Alexander’s writings as early as 1924. The magazine’s May edition contains three poems about Africa: “Africa” by Claude McKay, “Our Land” by Langston Hughes, and “Africa” by Lewis Alexander.

Lewis Alexander, Negro Woman

With multiple anthologies and at least two appearances in Opportunity (in April 1926 and January 1929), “Negro Woman” is arguably Alexander’s most anthologized poem.

Signing Off

The excellent examples of Alexander’s poetry help to illuminate his role as an active participant in the Renaissance, despite the fact that only a small portion of his life is preserved in print.

JD Vance, Biography

JD Vance was born on August 2, 1984, and was named James Donald Bowman. His mother changed his name to James David Vance, and he is popularly known as JD. Since 2023, the American politician, novelist, and Marine veteran has represented Ohio as the junior US senator. In the 2024 U.S. presidential election, he is the Republican contender for vice president.

JD Vance, Childhood

Beverly Carol and Donald Ray Bowman welcomed James Donald Bowman into the world on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio. His ancestry is Scots-Irish. When he was a toddler, his parents divorced. In order to eliminate his father’s name and maintain his nickname, JD, Bowman’s mother altered his name to James David Hamel when he was adopted by Bob Hamel, her third husband.

JD Vance: All You Need To Know About Him

On August 2, 1984, James Donald Bowman was born in Middletown, Ohio, an industrial community 20 miles south of Dayton and 30 miles north of Cincinnati. In the late 1940s, his maternal grandparents, Jim and Bonnie Vance, also referred to as “Papaw” and “Mamaw,” relocated to Middletown from Jackson, Kentucky, a town located in the coal belt of southeast Kentucky. Bonnie, who was 13 years old and expecting Jim’s kid, was 16 years old. At the time, they were both single. Vance has mentioned the conservative localist Rod Dreher, the reactionary blogger Curtis Yarvin, and the “postliberal” Catholic philosopher Patrick Deneen as some of his other contemporary intellectual inspirations. With Thiel’s more than $10 million in contributions, he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio in November 2022. His first public position was that one.

When Vance was a youngster, his biological parents, Bev Vance and Donald Bowman, divorced. Later, he was taken in by Bob Hamel, his mother’s new husband, and given the name James David Hamel. His nickname, JD, was maintained by the name change.

Hillbilly Elegy

On June 28, 2016, Vance’s autobiography, Hillbilly Elegy, was released. The book made the case that the social pathologies of the white working class, not the collapse of the American industrial sector, were largely to blame for the deterioration of post-industrial America.

JD Vance, Narya

Vance established his own Ohio-based startup capital business, Narya, in 2019. Narya was named after a mythical item from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books, just like Thiel’s company, Palantir.

Raised by Maternal grandparents

According to Vance’s writing, his mother battled drug addiction, and his early years were characterized by abuse and poverty. The primary caregivers for Vance and his sister Lindsey were his maternal grandparents, James and Bonnie Vance, whom they referred to as “Papaw” and “Mamaw.”

JD Vance, Education

After Middleton High School, Vance enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where he worked from 2003 to 2007 as a military journalist. He earned degrees from Yale Law School and Ohio State University. Before starting a career as a venture investor in the IT sector, he worked for a short time as a corporate lawyer. Hillbilly Elegy, his memoir, was released in 2016 and made into a movie in 2020.

JD Vance, Career

Before starting a career as a venture investor in the IT sector, he worked for a short time as a corporate lawyer. Hillbilly Elegy, his memoir, was released in 2016 and made into a movie in 2020.

In Ohio, Vance defeated Democratic candidate Tim Ryan to win the 2022 U.S. Senate race. Vance has been a fervent Trump supporter since Trump’s administration, having opposed Trump’s campaign in the 2016 election. Trump announced Vance as his running mate ahead of the Republican National Convention in July 2024.

JD Vance, Political Position

Vance identifies as a member of the post-liberal right and has been described as a right-wing populist and national conservative. He opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, gun regulation, and U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, among other political issues. Vance has admitted that his social views have been influenced by Catholic theology and is a vocal opponent of childlessness.

JD Vance, The Catholic Church

In August 2019, he had his Catholic baptism. The French philosopher René Girard, whom Thiel studied under at Stanford University, was recognized at the time with influencing his conversion through Thiel. Girard is most known for his “mimetic desire” thesis, which holds that people mimic the interests of their peers, leading to rivalries and violent disputes that are settled by “scapegoating” a shared foe.

JD Vance, Wife
