From 1984 to 1986, he was president of the Southern Baptist Convention for two one-year terms.

Charles Stanley Family: Parents and Siblings

Stanley was born in Dry Fork, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on September 25, 1932. Nine months later, his father, also named Charles, died. Stanley grew up in the rural Dry Fork area of Danville. He became a born-again Christian at the age of 12 and began his life’s work in Christian evangelism at the age of 14.

Charles Stanley’s Wife:

Following their separation in the spring of 1992, Stanley’s wife of more than 40 years, Anna J. Stanley, filed for divorce on June 22, 1993. They decided that Anna would revise the complaint to seek a legal separation (“separate maintenance”) instead of reconciliation. On March 20, 1995, she filed for divorce once more. Despite the fact that the marriage was not over, the Moody Radio Network station in Atlanta (then-WAFS) took Stanley’s daily show off the air for a period of time as administrators felt there was no evidence of reconciliation. On February 16, 2000, the Stanleys were legally separated when divorce papers were filed for the final time. On May 11, 2000, a court signed the final divorce decree.

The Southern Baptist Convention had a slight uproar over their divorce. The situation was compounded by allegations that Stanley had stated that if he divorced, he would quit as pastor. He indicated at the time of their separation that he did not expect it to end in divorce; but, when it did, his church members overwhelmingly decided to keep him on as pastor. Stanley will be permitted to keep his position at First Baptist Atlanta as long as he does not remarry, according to the church’s statutes. Anna Stanley died on 10th November 2014.

Charles Stanley Children

Charles has a daughter named Becky, whom Stanley has addressed in his lectures on a few occasions. Andy, Stanley’s son, is the pastor of adjacent Alpharetta’s North Point Community Church.

Charles Stanley Education

Stanley graduated from the University of Richmond with a bachelor’s degree and from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas with a master’s degree. Luther Rice Seminary in Florida awarded him a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry degree (now located in Lithonia, Georgia).

Charles Stanley In Touch / Charles Stanley Pastor, Church / Charles Stanley Podcast / In Touch Ministry

Stanley became the senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta in 1971 after joining the team in 1969. Stanley launched The Chapel Hour, a half-hour religious television program, in 1972. Charles launched In Touch Ministries in 1977 with the goal of leading individuals all over the world into a deepening relationship with Jesus Christ and strengthening local churches. In Touch first aired on the Christian Broadcasting Network in 1978. Since then, the show has been translated into 50 different languages. In Touch is carried on over 500 radio stations, 300 television stations, and many satellite networks in the United States, including The Inspiration Network (INSP) and Trinity Broadcasting Network. The In Touch website has Stanley’s sermons as well as additional audio and video programs.

In Touch magazine is also published by the ministry. Radio, television, publications, and internet media are all used by In Touch to spread the Gospel as soon as possible. Stanley got the term In Touch for his ministry from a Living Bible he had. Finances, parenthood, personal crises, emotional matters, relationships, and Protestantism are all topics that Stanley addresses in his writings and broadcasts. “Dr. Stanley sincerely considers the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God, a belief strongly expressed in his teaching,” according to the In Touch website. The Southern Baptist Convention elected Charles Stanley as its president in 1985.

In 2005, Stanley recruited Lisa Ryan to co-host “Bring It Home,” a question-and-answer segment that aired following his on-air sermon and was designed to help the audience better understand the content of the sermon by asking questions that the ordinary listener could ask. After Ryan’s departure in late 2006, the segment was carried on by Stanley alone. Stanley began teaching his “30 Life Principles” in the concluding portion of the In Touch TV and radio shows in early 2007.

In 2017, Stanley named Anthony George to eventually succeed him as senior pastor of First Baptist Church. Stanley announced his resignation as senior pastor and move to pastor emeritus on September 13, 2020. Stanley, on the other hand, has stated that he does not believe in retirement and will continue to work at In Touch Ministries.
