Franklin organized “The Family,” a 17-voice choir composed of neighbors and friends. After hearing one of their demo tapes, Vicki Mack-Lataillade, co-founder of the budding GospoCentric Records label, was so delighted that she immediately signed Kirk. The group, now known as “Kirk & The Family,” released their debut album in 1993 under the name & Kirk Franklin & The Family. The song achieved platinum sales status and spent nearly two years on the gospel music charts as well as the R&B charts. For 42 weeks, it occupied the top slot on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. It was only the third gospel music album to sell over a million copies, following Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace and BeBe & CeCe Winans’ Addictive Love.

He wrote the soundtrack for the movie Kingdom Come. The music featured popular performers Az Yet, Jill Scott, Tamar Braxton, and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, as well as gospel artists Mary Mary, Trin-i-tee 5:7, Crystal Lewis, and Franklin’s group 1NC. The Rebirth of Franklin was eventually released in February 2002 after being postponed. It topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list for 29 weeks, stayed 29 weeks at the top of the Gospel Albums chart, and was given a Platinum certification. The album has contributions from Bishop T.D. Jakes, Shirley Caesar, Willie Neal Johnson, TobyMac, Crystal Lewis, Jaci Velasquez, Papa San, Alvin Slaughter, and Yolanda Adams. In 2021, he became one of the inaugural members of the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.
