Marian Robinson, Biography

Marian Robinson was the mother-in-law of former president of the United States, Barrack Obama. She was the mother of Craig Robinson and former USA first lady Michelle Obama.

Marian Robinson, Age and Birthday

Marian was born on July 29,1937 in Chicago. She passed away on May 31, 2024 when she was 86 years old. She was the fourth born of Purnell Nathaniel Shields’ seven children. Nathaniel was a house painter and carpenter while her mother Rebecca Jumper was a licensed practical nurse.

Marian Robinson’s Ancestry

Her parents were multi-racial. Dolphus T. Shields, the grandfather to her grandmother was a slavery descendant. Dolphus’ mother was a slave while the white father was the heir of the slave owner. Dolphus relocated from Georgia to Birmingham, Alabam and established his toll sharpening and carpentry business. The Great Migration would then lead to his descendants moving to Chicago.

Marian Robinson’s Husband

On October 27. 1960, Fraser Robinson III married Marian in Chicago. The couple had two children, Michelle LaVaughn and Craig Malcolm. Her husband died from multiple sclerosis in 1991.

Marian Robinson’s Career

She worked as a secretary for Spiegel, a mail order retailer,a bank, and the University of Chicago.

A rented floor apartment of a bungalow that belonged to her Robbie and Terry, her aunt and uncle respectively was her home in the late 1960s. She raised Michelle and Craig there. In her book, Becoming, Michelle Obama describes Robinson’s attachment to the Chicago home. Though she raised her children as a a stay home mother intitially, she eventually resumed work as an executive assistant at a bank when Michelle started highschool.

Shields moved to the white house with the Obamas when Barrack Obama became president. During the campaign, she helped the Obamas by supporting Malia and Sasha, her granddaughters.
