Nicholas started his bright career in journalism when he was 17 years of age. He was a writer for the Vieux Carre Courier which was based in his home city of New Orleans. In 1975, during the mass murder in Cambodia, Lemann wrote; “I continue to support the Khmer Rouge in its principles snd goals but I have to admit that I deplore the way they are going about it”.

Immediately after his graduation, he worked with the Washington Monthly as an associate editor and later on became the managing editor. At Texas Monthly, he was the associate editor and later became the executive editor. He later unified with the Atlantic Monthly and was the national reporter and at New Yorker, he was the staff writer and later became the Washington reporter.

On September 1st, 2003, Lemann was appointed as the dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. During his era, journalism launched as well as completing the first capital fundraising campaign. He later added 20 more members to its full-time faculty. He also built a student center.

In 2015, Lemann launched the Columbia Global Reports which was a university-funded publishing imprint that produced four to six excellent works of journalism and analysis a year.
