He is a supporter of Norwich City because he was born in Norwich, Norfolk. Thus, he began his playing career for Great Yarmouth Town in non-League football before moving on to Diss Town, where he won the FA Vase in 1994. At the age of 23, after playing for Wroxham, he began his professional career when he signed with Wigan Athletic. He later transferred to Rotherham, where he played more than 250 games across all competitions. Later, he relocated to Oldham, where he quickly won over the hearts of the locals. He later moved on a free transfer to Yeovil after helping the team to the League One playoffs in the 2006–2007 seasons.
In Yeovil, he had more difficulty consistently scoring. He joined his former club Rotherham United on trial in the summer of 2009 after failing to reach a new contract agreement with Yeovil. He performs well in the preseason. Paul subsequently agreed to a one-year contract with the Millers and made his debut against Accrington Stanley on opening day.
