Rick Warren Purpose Driven
Individual pastors who contacted or wrote to Warren in the early days of Saddleback were taught the content that would one day become the Purpose Driven philosophy of ministry. Warren obtained experience teaching the curriculum through his involvement with Fuller Theological Seminary’s Institute for Evangelism and Church Growth.
Warren’s best-selling book, The Purpose Driven Church, was published in 1995 by Zondervan and distilled many of the lessons he had learned while founding Saddleback Church and honing during years of training other pastors. The book presents a case for growing a church around five objectives (worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism) using what Warren called a “crowd to core” strategy of church growth after delivering the “Saddleback Story.” He urged churches to go out to their communities, draw in a crowd, convert attendees to members, mature those members into ministers, and send them out on a mission. (From the table of contents of The Purpose Driven Church). More than 10,000 churches from various denominations attended Warren’s seminar or conference in 2004.
