Ruben Amorim, Age and Birthday
Amorim is 39 years old and was born on January 27, 1985.
Ruben Amorim as a Player
Amorim’s primary position as a football player was midfield. He played for Benfica and Belenenses for most of his professional career. Amorim joined Benfica in 2008 and won 10 major trophies there, including three league crowns, five Taças da Liga, one Taça de Portugal, and one Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. He earned 14 caps overall while playing for Portugal in two FIFA World Cups.
Ruben Amorim as a Manager
Amorim started coaching at Casa Pia in 2018 after retiring in 2017, however, he left in 2018 due to a disagreement with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). Prior to leading the senior squad in December 2019 and winning the 2020 Taça da Liga, he was named head coach of Braga B.
Amorim became the third most expensive manager in history when he was hired as Sporting CP’s manager in March 2020. He ended the Primeira Liga’s 19-year league title drought by leading the team to a double of the Taça da Liga and the Primeira Liga. He was named the Manager of the Year for the 2020–21 season in Primeira Liga as a result of these accomplishments. Later, in the 2023–24 season, he guided them to yet another Primeira Liga championship.
Ruben Amorim, Style of Play
Amorim’s approach was comparable to that of his countryman Tiago, who played the same position in center midfield and could be used as a winger or right-back in addition to being a defensive and attacking player.
Ruben Amorim, Manchester United
Sporting said on October 29 that Amorim’s €10 million release clause will be activated by the English team after Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was fired. He responded to United’s interest after leading Sporting to a 3-1 victory against Nacional in the Taça da Liga quarterfinals, stating, “It’s a negotiation between two clubs.” Even with the [release] provisions, it’s never simple. They must communicate. Following the game [against Estrela da Amadora], everything will be obvious. We will make a choice after the game tomorrow, so we have one more day. Manchester United, a Premier League team, declared on November 1 that Amorim had been hired on a contract that would last until 2027 and that he would start working for the team on November 11.

Strategy
Amorim’s strategy stems from his conviction that a team must be more than the sum of its parts; it must work as a cohesive one. He prioritizes treating his players like people above athletes. His management approach at Sporting created a sense of unity among his players that permeated their daily lives and transcended the locker room.
Ruben Amorim’s Defending Tactics
When Amorim joined Sporting CP in March 2020, he mostly used the 3-4-3 formation that he had used at Casa Pia and Braga. Two midfielders, typically João Palhinha and Matheus Nunes, and later Morten Hjulmand and Hidemasa Morita in the seasons that followed, were in charge of defending the defense and highlighting the attacking prowess of the wing-backs, Pedro Porro and Nuno Mendes initially, and then Geny Catamo. Sporting players sit beneath the box line when defending in a low block to maintain a tight shape, stop any shots from the box’s edge, and reduce attacking possibilities. In the last third, Amorim’s squad tries to regain possession of the ball by applying a fierce pressing technique.
Attacking Tactics
To divert the attention of the opposing defenders and provide up space for the attackers to exploit, Amorim’s squad alternates their moves. With players like Pedro Gonçalves playing inside and Pablo Sarabia and Nuno Santos staying on the left side of the attack, they concentrate on taking advantage of the flanks and half-spaces. The only player who tends to press the ball and slow down the opposition’s progress is the number nine, first Paulinho and then Gyökeres after the Swede was signed in 2023.
This is done in an effort to open up a gap in the opposition’s defensive line that can be swiftly attacked. This gives the player in possession the opportunity to look for a vertical passing option first. A second striker, two touchline-hugging wingers, one versatile center forward, two “controlling” midfielders are responsible for feeding the attack-minded players. Three mobile defenders and one covering space make up Amorim’s 3–4–3 diamond formation.
Ruben Amorim’s Wife and Children
Maria Joao Diogo is the spouse of Ruben Amorim. In 2013, the pair married in front of 160 guests in the Palacio e Mosteiro de Sao Marcos in Coimbra, Portugal. With a degree in telecommunications engineering, Maria and Raquel Gomes co-founded Dois Tons, an interior design company, in 2019. Miguel is the name of their 2016-born kid.
Throughout Ruben’s career, Maria has been a pillar of support. When he played for Al-Wakrah, she even moved to Qatar with him. Her decision to back Ruben’s football career in spite of her prosperous profession demonstrated their close bond and support for one another.
