He also contributed to OnQ, a news program that was shown on WQED-TV. Smith studied theater and drama at Marian College in Indiana, where he received his degree in 1971. His radio career began at WLBC- AM/FM in Muncie, Indiana, that same year. Later, he held positions at WIFE-AM in Indianapolis, Indiana, and WHAS-AM/FM/TV in Louisville, Kentucky.
