Ted Arthur Haggard (born June 27, 1956) is an evangelical pastor in the United States. Haggard is the founder of the Association of Life-Giving Churches and the former pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. From 2003 to November 2006, he was President of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE).

In November 2006, Ted made national headlines when male prostitute and masseur Mike Jones said that Haggard, who had campaigned against same-sex marriage legislation, had paid him for sex for three years and had also bought and used crystal methamphetamine. Ted Haggard Early Life, Young, Family: Parents and Siblings, Education

Haggard was born in the state of Indiana. J. M. Haggard, a veterinarian in Yorktown, Indiana, developed a multinational charismatic ministry that was featured in a PBS Middletown documentary series. Ted claims he was molested as a child when he was 7 years old.

Haggard became a born-again Christian in 1972, at the age of 16, after seeing evangelist Bill Bright preach in Dallas, Texas, and being acquainted with C. S. Lewis’s Christian apologetics. Haggard published honest pieces about services available to prevent and treat increasingly common pregnancies and STDs as a co-editor of his high school newspaper in 1974. These stories outraged his small community, resulting in a free-press lawsuit against him.

After his first year of college, Haggard recalls experiencing the call of God on his life while cooking at home. He had planned to major in telecommunications with a minor in journalism, but after this event, he felt compelled to become a pastor. Haggard went on to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1978.
