Asma al-Assad, the Syrian First Lady, was born and raised in London to Syrian parents. She is the wife of the 19th president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad. Asma is one of the economic players in Syria, controlling several business sectors, including, banking, real estate, telecommunications, and maritime industries. She was part of the preliminary inquiry within the Metropolitan Police War Crimes Unit. The allegations included incitement of terrorist acts and a systemic approach to torture and murder of civilians with the use of chemical weapons.

Asma Fawaz Akhras was born on 11, August 1957, in London. Her father, Fawaz Akhras, was a cardiologist at Cromwell Hospital, while her mother, Sahar Akhras, was a retired diplomat who was the first secretary at the Syrian Embassy in London. They are Sunni Muslims of Syrian origin, hailing from Homs. Assad is 48 years old.

Asma grew up in Acton, London, attending Twyford Church of England High School. She later went to a private girls’ school, Queen’s College, London, studying alongside Ringo Star’s daughter. In 1996, she graduated from King’s College London with a first-class honors Bachelor of Science degree in computer science.

Assad started work at Deutsche Bank Group as an economics analyst. In 1988, she joined J.P. Morgan’s investment banking division, working in a team focusing on biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Asma married Bashar in December 2000. Bashar had just taken over the presidency after Hafez al-Assad’s death in June of the same year. Their marriage came as a surprise as previously there had been no reports of courtship or dating.

Assad began treatment for early-stage breast cancer on August 8, 2018, and announced that she had fully recovered in August 2019.

Asma al-Assad, the Syrian First Lady, was diagnosed with leukemia on April 21, 2024. This came at a time when questions were arising on why the UN had issued arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant and left out her husband Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian dictator. The warrants were issued on the basis of alleged crimes against humanity.
